The Mekong River stretches for 4350 kilometres from the Tibetan Plateau to the South China Sea. Every year during monsoons the river swells to its widest breadth of 14 kilometres in the Siphandone region. When the water recedes, it invariably leaves behind thousands of big and small islands and islets.

Locally known as Li Phi the falls are believed to be a trap for evil spirits.
